SEND DRUM CORPS EAST

Los Angeles Herald, Wednesday Morning, July 27, 1904, page 5.

Money Is Being Raised by Friends of Veteran Organization.

Los Angeles has a Grand Army of the Republic Fife and Drum corps, comprising eighteen members, all of whom served as musicians in the union army during the civil war. The members of the corps are uniformed. The ages of its members range from 60 to 75 years. It is unlikely that there is any other organization like this in the G. A. R. anywhere in the United States. The annual encampment of the Grand Army meets In Boston on the 15th of August.

“It would be patriotic as well as a good business Investment,” said a veteran yesterday, “to send this drum corps to Boston to attend the encampment. It is a safe prediction that there will be no musical organization there that will attract the attention that this drum corps would attract. I understand an effort is being made to raise a sum sufficient to pay the expenses of the trip.”

About $1400 will be required. Half this amount has been raised.
