CIVIL WAR DRUMMER DIES HERE

Los Angeles Times, February 27, 1923.

Robert Bain, Forty Years in State, Engaged in Construction Business

Robert Bain died early yesterday morning at his home at 332 West Sixty-Seventh Street. Mr. Bain, who was 80 years of age, was a Civil War veteran. For many years he had been affiliated with the Stanton Post of the G.A.R.

During the Civil War he served as a drummer, using an instrument captured in 1776 from the Hessians. Mr. Bain kept the drum throughout his life, and cherished it above all other possessions. It has often been an object of curiosity in parades in Southern California.

Mr. Bain came to California nearly forty years ago, and entered the contracting and construction business, from which he retired several years before his death. He was a member of the Society of Southern California Pioneers.

He leaves a widow, Mrs. Dora F. Bain; a son, Robert A. Bain, and a daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Jones. The body is at Garrett Brothers’ undertaking parlors, 1237 South Flower street. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Garrett Brothers’ chapel.
